The Carroll situation.......
Our record signing seems to be a shoe in whenever he is fit but I can't help but think he would be better to bring on to shake things up and give us a different dimension if things are not working with Sakho and Valencia.

With the amazing start of the season Sakho and Valencia have had together, should Carroll be the starter over what was 2 very capable players and a partnership that was only going to get better? Our style of play was more pleasing on the eye and we had pace and movement to hurt anyone. With Song in the middle of the park strutting around with the ball begging for 2 strikers with movement in front of him, it is also limiting the damage he can do to teams with his amazing passing range which unlock defences in an instant. I can't help but think that it is something that may hold us back unless a partnership develops with Carroll and 1 of the one of the other 2.

For me Carroll does not score enough goals to warrant the start over a fit Sakho and Valencia based on their start to the season, they should start over Carroll when fit...........somehow I dont see that happening anytime soon.

Been done already.

I also don't see Mark Noble mentioned anywhere?

It's our worst result for while and Noble wasn't playing.

Same logic as this thread that's already been done

I agree with this, but I must say you've had a terrible few years on here, fordy son.

You went bollock deep on Jack Collison - Without a club

You went bollock deep on Diarra - Fuck knows where he is

You went bollock deep on Diame - Relegation battle with Hull City TIGERS

You went bollock deep on Valencia - Benched at the first opportunity for Carroll.

Re: The Carroll situation.......
Didn't 'farts also say that Noble would never be a regular under Allardyce?

We have picked up 10 points from 12 with Carroll leading the line and he is getting stronger every week. He's a starter for me.

Re: The Carroll situation.......
To be fair, Carroll only came back into the starting XI when the others were injured, so I’m not sure we’re in a position to say he’s a she-in when fit. Results since he came back in have been very good, so no reason he shouldn’t retain his place for the moment.

I do agree that Valencia adds more to our game, but for all the accusations of a lack of goals from Carroll, and despite Valencia’s obvious talent – Carroll has 2 goals in 6 games (5 starts), Valencia has 3 in 13 (9 starts).

Re: The Carroll situation.......
Valencia and Sakho were both injured which allowed Carroll a way back into the side. I don't think he just walked into the first X1. He scored 2 goals in the last match so it was only fair that he started v Sunderland.

Nolan also had to wait for injuries to get his chance. He also played well and deserved to retain his place.

It is a long season and players will get injured or suspended, allowing others to get their chance to impress. We also have the African Nations Cup coming up so Valencia will have his chance then anyway.

Re: The Carroll situation.......
Sakho plus either Carroll or Valencia is a decent partnership. I don't see Carroll and Valencia working for some reason.

The problem with Carroll always in the team is the tendency to look for his head even if that is not a conscious tactic.

Keeping it mixed will make us more difficult to play against. Selection can be varied depending on strengths and weaknesses of opposition.

Lovely problem to have this.
I reckon start Sakho and Valencia and then the option to bring on Carroll against Leicester will be what I’d do

So fordy missing (by his own admission) the attention his comment on Nobles bring starts another one of these threads because he sees they get responses.

But I will play -

Carroll was our best forward of the three on Saturday. Anyone disagree? Him and Sakho start.

Agreed, against Leicester that's exactly what I'd do. Wes MORGAN and their other shithouse defenders will be much happier dealing with crosses than they will people running down the sides of them.

Come to think of it, he's probably still suspended for getting sent off after someone ran down the side of him.

Re: The Carroll situation.......
I would go Sakho Valencia against Leicester. We should have more than enough with them two, I wouldn't mind Carroll getting a rest as he's played a lot lately after such a long spell out and we really need him as fresh as possible when sakho goes to the ACN.

Monk

I dont think thats the only problem with Carroll, I dont think his movement is great, always takes up the far post so the ball has to be hung up there, I think there was an example of this Saturday where had he pulled out towards the penalty spot, like bony did against us sahko could have found him but he went far post and made it difficult to pick him out, he does it a lot.

Also his lack of pace means teams can defend high up the pitch against him where as against valencia and sahko they are terrified to leave that space in behind.

Finally with valencia an sahko their energy and shutting down the back 4 meant we started nicking the ball higher up the pitch and putting us on the front foot earlier, I really enjoyed seeing us play like that.

Unfortunately Carroll just doesn't have the tools to do that.

Re: The Carroll situation.......
I honestly believe we would have beat Sunderland had Sakho and Valencia started........Oshea had Carroll in his pocket most of the game.

With Valencia and Sakhos movement and pace they would have struggled.

Re: The Carroll situation.......
To be fair to Carroll, he didn't get much service to his bonce in the area.
When he did, he knocked it down nicely for Sakho, who proceeded to fall over.

axeman

Yes agree up to a point. In some situations Carroll is just what you need but Sakho with Valencia adds a lot more to the team as whole for the reasons you state.

The difference in pace and energy throughout the team is also impacted by including Nolan as well so for me it has to be Morgan as the 4th midfielder when Carroll is involved.

Re: The Carroll situation.......
When Valencia has come off the Recaro, he has had no impact whatsoever.

Is he prone to sulk if he doesn't start?
